There are several methods for lip augmentation. The simplest one is the application of collagen or hyaluronic acid injections which highlight the lips but are absorbable, the effect is then time limited. Duration of the effect is 2 or 3 months, it depends on the amount of the injected material, convalescence is individual connected with possible oedema after the application. Materials with a longer-lasting effect which contain non-absorbable microscopic granules might form visible palpable nodes by encapsulating these granules. Therefore, I consider the use to be risky. In the last year the substance Radiesse has been used. Its effect lasts 1.5 - 2 years, it is applied mainly on the outline of the upper or lower lip and with a certain risk of transparent light granules it can temporarily be used in the red zone of both lips... In the outline of the lips for slight accentuation there can be used non-absorbable but very well tolerated material Goretex. It is not used in the red zone of the lip for increasing the volume, though. The red lip zone can be augmented without any risk by injecting one´s own fatty tissue in the red. It is necessary to transfer a surplus of adipose tissues which causes distinctive oedema for two weeks. Sometimes it needs to be repeated in case of higher individual absorption. The effect of the surgery can last for several years. The transfer of one´s own fatty tissue is also used as a solution for deep mimic wrinkles around a lip or deep nasolabial folds. Permanent lip augmentation can be reached by displacement of the red from the buccal mucosa. It is carried out under local anaesthesia in 2 phases. The surgeries are performed outpatiently under local anaesthesia, before the application of the injection anaesthetic EMLA cream is used. It needs to be applied 2 hours before the application of the augmentative injection. The methods can be combined with other surgeries, e. g. face lifting.
